An emerging tablet market... Business Apps

So, how are businesses going to maximise their use of this new tablet platform for mobile business apps - beyond mobile email, document viewing and browsing on-the-move...?

The simple answer is that they don't know yet - most are either piloting tablets using the above, basic apps or they are still unsure what role they'll take. In a few examples, large companies are gaining access to their corporate and business apps via Citrix but this is cumbersome due to the target apps being mouse/keyboard optimised, not touch-enabled. So, for the enterprise to adopt the new tablet platform wholeheartedly then it's the business apps availability that really needs to be there - with a truely touch-based UI; and, unfortunately this is going to take quite some time to deliver based on current ISV (independent software vendor) roll-outs.

What else could stimulate the productivity enhancements to accelerate tablet adoption? Well, it seems like the smarter MIS departments are looking to internally certify and "bundle" small utility/business apps to deliver productivity "quick-wins". For example, taking "best of breed" business apps like iTimeSheet for billing; mobile expense apps like ProOnGo; business travel apps like FlightTrack Pro; online article savers like Instapaper; and, note apps like Evernote. Wrap these all together and you get a cluster of productivity apps to move your users on to the next level.

But there are many more hurdles to overcome before the enterprise market (and SMB market for that matter) truely embraces the tablet... watch this space for more Tablet market commentary.
